Teacher arrested and charged for sexually assaulting 13-year-old student and allegedly having a baby with him

A teacher in New Jersey has been arrested for very serious crimes involving one of her past students.

Laura Caron, who is 34 years old, has been charged with three crimes:

  1. Aggravated Sexual Assault (a very serious crime).
  2. Sexual Assault (a less serious crime than the first).
  3. Endangering the Welfare of a Child (putting a child in danger).

The police in Cape May County announced this on Wednesday (January 15) in a post on Facebook. They said she was arrested without any problems.

What Did Laura Caron Do?

The police said their investigation showed that between 2016 and 2020, Ms. Caron had an inappropriate sexual relationship with a boy who was born in 2005. This means the boy was between 11 and 15 years old during that time. He was living in Ms. Caron’s house when this happened.

The police also said the trouble started when Ms. Caron was the boy’s teacher in the 5th grade. She also taught his brother.

When the boy turned 13, Ms. Caron—who was 28 years old at the time—allegedly became pregnant with his child. She gave birth to a baby in 2019, according to reports.

How Did the Police Find Out?

In December of last year, the boy’s father shared his suspicions on social media. He said Ms. Caron’s 5-year-old child looked very similar to his son.

The boy later texted his sister, telling her that Ms. Caron had abused him and that he was the father of her child. The police talked to the boy after this, and he repeated the story to them.

More Details About the Case

The police said that the boy’s family became friends with Ms. Caron before all of this happened. At first, the parents let their children spend time at Ms. Caron’s house each week. Later, the children started living with her full-time.

If Ms. Caron is found guilty of these crimes, she could go to jail for 10 to 20 years for sexual assault. The other charges could add another 5 to 10 years to her sentence.

What Officials Are Saying

Prosecutor Jeffrey Sutherland spoke about the case. He said:
“This arrest shows how hard we are working to keep children safe in our community. Teachers have an important job, and these allegations are very upsetting because they break the trust teachers are supposed to have with their students. We will do everything we can to make sure justice is served and to support the victim and his family.”

The Middle Township School District, where Ms. Caron worked as a teacher, is also helping with the investigation. Superintendent David Salvo said:
“When we first heard about these accusations, Ms. Caron was immediately put on paid leave and still is. We are working with the authorities and offering support to anyone affected by this news.”
