Mom’s tragic last words revealed after dying from poisoned mushroom in sushi roll

A woman lost her life after eating what seemed like a harmless sushi roll, highlighting the potential risks behind certain ingredients in this popular dish.

Sushi is a widely loved cuisine in the United States, with nearly five million Americans reportedly enjoying it every month. The dish is not only flavorful but can also have health benefits. Abbie Gellman, MS, a registered dietitian and chef, told USA Today, “Because sushi contains lean protein, healthy fats, and carbohydrates, it can be part of a healthy diet.” Similarly, Josh Redd, NMD, founder of RedRiver Health and Wellness, mentioned that the “health benefits of sushi stem mainly from its fish and seaweed.”

However, sushi often contains ingredients beyond fish and seaweed—such as mushrooms. In 2023, Donna Ventura consumed sushi containing morel mushrooms at a local restaurant, Dave’s Sushi. Unfortunately, it’s believed that the mushrooms were undercooked, which caused her to fall seriously ill.

The Tragic Events Following the Meal

Donna started feeling unwell within an hour of eating the sushi roll. Her condition worsened rapidly, and she suffered cardiac arrest. She was rushed to Bozeman Deaconess Regional Medical Center in Montana, where the 64-year-old lost the ability to speak, as reported by PEOPLE.

Unable to communicate verbally, Donna wrote her final words to her family in notes. Speaking to KBZK, her husband Jon recalled, “Some of the messages she wrote were, ‘I’m not sure I can go on much longer, how are we going to manage, I can’t stand the pain.’”

He added, “The last few notes she wrote were to me and our son. She wrote, ‘I love you,’ to me, and to our son, she wrote, ‘I love you, Mr. C.’” Tragically, Donna passed away 12 days after being admitted to the hospital.

Jon described the experience as “surreal,” explaining how unimaginable it was that something as simple as eating lunch could lead to such a devastating outcome. In April 2024, Jon filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Dave’s Sushi, seeking accountability for Donna’s untimely death. “I told my wife on her deathbed that one of my jobs would be to hold those accountable for what they’ve done to her,” Jon explained to The Independent.

A Widespread Impact

Donna was not the only victim of the incident. Another individual also reportedly passed away, while 50 others fell ill after consuming the same undercooked mushrooms.

In May 2023, Dave’s Sushi issued a public statement addressing the situation. Part of the statement, shared on Twitter, read: “The Gallatin City-County Health Department released a statement dated May 3, 2023, noting that they and other local, state, and federal agencies are continuing to investigate the foodborne illness outbreak. While the investigation may not identify a specific pathogen, preliminary findings indicate that food containing morel mushrooms may be the exposure of concern.”

The restaurant expressed its condolences, stating, “No matter the circumstances or the findings, our hearts go out to the loved ones of the two people who passed away and to all who have been impacted.”

The Search for Answers

As of September 2024, the exact toxin responsible for making people sick remains unknown, according to Food Poisoning News. Investigations are ongoing to determine the source of the illness and prevent such tragedies in the future.

Donna’s story serves as a heartbreaking reminder of how crucial food safety is, even with seemingly harmless dishes like sushi. Her family continues to seek justice and accountability for her loss, hoping no one else will have to endure a similar tragedy.
